Why Some Batches Hit Harder
(the real reasons your edibles aren't always consistent)
Even with perfect recipes and exact dosing, some batches feel twice as strong. Here's what actually moves the needle – no myths, just the factors we’ve tracked across hundreds of infusions.
1. Starting material variance
Flower labeled 25% THC can range 20–30% in reality. A “weak” 20% batch gives 80% of expected potency; a hot 30% batch gives 120%. Kief and rosin are more consistent, distillate is dead-on every time. Switch to distillate if you want zero surprises.
2. Decarb efficiency
Underdone at 220 °F = mostly THCA left (weak). Overdone at 260 °F+ = some THC degrades to CBN (sleepy but less psychoactive). The 240 °F / 40-minute sealed-jar method hits the sweet spot 98–100% of the time.
3. Infusion temperature and time
Low and slow (170–185 °F for 2 hours) pulls maximum THC without harsh flavors. Too hot (over 200 °F) extracts more chlorophyll and can degrade potency slightly. Too short = incomplete transfer.
4. Fat type and amount
Higher butterfat (Kerrygold 82–84%) binds more cannabinoids than cheap 80% butter or oil. Coconut oil (refined) and ghee give near-100% transfer. Using too little fat leaves THC behind in plant material.
5. Straining thoroughness
Hard squeeze through 90-micron = almost everything extracted. Lazy pour-through = 20–30% potency left in the weed. Always press.
6. Your biology that day
Empty stomach = faster onset, perceived stronger peak. Full meal (especially fatty) = slower onset but higher total absorption (can feel 20–50% stronger overall). Hydration, tolerance, and metabolism swing it too.
7. Storage and age
Fresh infusion = full potency. 6+ months old = slight degradation (5–15% loss). Heat/light exposure speeds this up.
The fix for rock-solid consistency
Use distillate or lab-tested concentrate. Weigh exactly. Follow the same decarb/infusion/strain process every time. Store cool and dark.
